PROJECT ORIGIN

I graduated in fine arts at Laval University (Quebec city) in 2007. As my final exibit, I presented the Web project “Refuge” in wich I explored the poetic potential of many Web sites. For this Web Art project I have been awarded a prize from la Chambre Blanche, an artist-run center.

Then, in 2008, I started developing a Web project during a rensidency at la Chambre Blanche. As a beginning, I tried to express my vision of a “living, or human, Web” by creating a collection of human values represented by a collective patchwork inspired by traditional weaving handicraft and other networks found in nature, such as chrysalises.

Finally, for this Web Art project, I played with network concepts and human values to create different kind of visualizations of humanity. For the present project submission, I am presenting the Web Art project “Chrysalide humaine /Human Chrysalis ”. The chrysalis is a biological envelope meant for metamorphosis where everything inside is in a constant state of change. It is an open Web site where I play with the specificities of the living Web (Google map, Tag clouds and social networks).

DESCRIPTION
Chrysalide humaine is a work-in-progress using a collection of tag clouds to form a fresco of human values.

It is a dynamic database which can be visualized through different ways of research (family names, first names, birth dates, values and Google geographical maps). I have included a form based around an individual value system for visitors willing to participate. Just like the making of a chrysalis, the act of writing comes close to the process of weaving where the hypertext becomes some kind of fabric.

I consider that a great metamorphosis has been instigated in humanity reality. Is humanism dating from the 15th century going to be refreshed or reactualized? My first intention was to put emphasis on our human values as the core matter needed in order to allow changes. I am asking the question : With what values is humanity weaving its existence? That is why I hope to touch people by my intentions and the participative aspect of Chrysalide Humaine. This project is directly connected with the digital communities nature. I look forward to present that work to my extended community. The experiment Chrysalide humaine will continue to grow through human manipulations and relations.
